How to care for wool throws and rugs
Wool is self-cleaning, warm and almost indestructible – if you treat it right.
Wool's secret is lanolin, the natural oil that repels dirt and water. Most of the time, all a wool throw needs is fresh air.
Our five rules
- Air it outside on a dry day, ideally in cold weather.
- Brush, don't wash: a soft brush lifts dust and refreshes the fibres.
- Blot spills straight away with cold water; never rub.
- Rotate rugs twice a year so they wear evenly.
- If you must wash, use cold water and a wool detergent, and dry flat.
Treated this way, the Fjäll throw or the Matta rug will last for generations.
